STAMPIN' UP! BLOG HOP : MASCULINE THEME

Today I'm taking part in a blog hop, with 7 other friends who are also Stampin' Up! demonstrators in Australia.  The theme of our blog hop this time is "masculine projects" - right up my alley!

I've made a couple of cards using Stampin' Up!'s Frightful Sight Designer Series Papers.  I love the colours in these papers - Basic Black, Basic Grey, Cajun Craze and Old Olive.  They get me out of my usual habit of gravitating towards browns and blues for male cards.

First up is a card I made for hubby's nephew, whose birthday was last week.

To make the 'medallion' for around the sentiment, I used my Scallop Circle punch, rotated the punched shape and punched again (to 'sharpen' the rounded scalloped edges), then snipped the edges by hand to give the shape a less uniform look.

This week at Just Add Ink, Mae has set a stunning colour challenge, and you are going to LOVE the variety of samples from the Design Team.

I've gone for my favourite kind of card - one for the boys.  These are GREAT colours for a masculine project.

JAI #119: A SKETCH CHALLENGE

This week at Just Add Ink, Mae has provided us with a great sketch for a card/scrapbook page:

It was my brother's birthday this week, so I used this sketch to make his card.

It's a little hard to see the detail of the background papers I've used, because I've embossed and sponged them to death, but I do like the 'grungy' look that resulted.  I've used three different pieces of Stampin' Up!'s Well Worn Designer Series Paper.  I have in my stash some Crumb Cake corduroy buttons, that are long since retired from Stampin' Up!'s range, but which come in handy for masculine cards.  The smaller buttons have been sponged with Not Quite Navy ink; I love that they can be customised!

I had to make a birthday card for a special young man, and, rather than re-invent the wheel, thought I'd CASE myself - since I was rather pleased with this card I made in recent days.

STAMPIN' UP! EXTREME ELEMENTS & GRUNGE ROCK FOR A 5OTH

Stampin' Up!'s Extreme Elements stamp set has long been a favourite of mine, for male cards especially.  I've combined stamps from that set, with Grunge Rock (a new-to-me stamp set, that I am loving) - how great does the sentiment look?  This card is for my brother-in-law, who recently celebrated his half-century.

My trusty Color Coach suggested I combine Always Artichoke, Crumb Cake and (would you believe it?) Bashful Blue.  I must say I rather like how these colours work together.

JAI # 104 : BACK TO SCHOOL

This week's challenge at Just Add Ink is to make a papercraft project with a "back to school" theme.  Here in Australia (and in New Zealand), the summer holidays are over, and a new school year has just begun.  Speaking of new beginnings, this is my very first submission as part of the Design Team at Just Add Ink!

My eldest son is commencing his VCE this year.  It's the last two years of his secondary schooling, and both Years 11 and 12 count towards the final assessment that determines entry to university/tertiary studies.  I wanted to encourage Jack to do the best he can do (I always tell him that, but I reckon he thinks I'm nagging!), so came up with this card for him, as he enters this important stage of his schooling.

I created the large star, on which the sentiment is mounted, by punching out five 'pennants' with my Petite Pennants Builder punch.  I sponged the edges of each pennant, and adhered them to the reverse side of the Riding Hood Red circle.

STAMPIN' UP! "TICKETS & TAGS" SIMPLY SCRAPPIN' KIT - PART 2

I'm back, as promised, with another card made using paper from my new Tickets & Tags Simply Scrappin' Kit.  The grungy grid paper in this pack pairs perfectly with Well Worn Designer Series Paper, and is great for "guy" cards.

HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY WISHES FOR MY BOY

Ethan, my baby (even though he HATES me calling him that!) is 11 today.  He's almost as tall as his mother, but not too grown up for me to steal lots of cuddles ... even if his arms aren't involved.

The birthday boy requested a card that was "Crumb Cake, White and Blue".  "Blue" is pretty general, when it comes to Stampin' Up! colours, and I'm not sure if these are the blues Ethan had in mind, but here's the card I made for him.  The new hostess stamp set called Happiest Birthday Wishes features prominently - LOVE this set.

Here's a close-up of the sentiment.  Four Frames is one of my FAVOURITE new stamp sets; it can be customised in so many ways.  I stamped off some stars in Crumb Cake, overstamped the sentiment from Happiest Birthday Wishes, then used my trusty Stamp-a-ma-jig to position the frame over the top.  I punched it out with the Decorative Label punch, sponged the edges, and mounted it with Stampin' Dimensionals.  Cool, yes?

BLACK AND WHITE FAREWELL CARD

One of Ethan's mates from school is about to return to New Zealand to live, and Ethan asked me to make a farewell card.  My brief was to use black and white.

It's a simple card, but I love it, and hope the young man (who will be sorely missed) does too.  I've used Stampin' Up!'s new silver mini brads on this card, and they are FABULOUS - they're not much bigger than pin heads, and are great, low-profile, embellishments for cards.  I can see I'll be using lots of these!

WELL WORN, PERFECTLY PENNED MALE CARD

A friend of ours, who doesn't visit my blog (as far as I know!), is about to celebrate a birthday.  It's a very special day on our calendar, as our second son was born on the same day (albeit some 34 years after Darren was).

I decided to cut into my brand new pack of Stampin' Up!'s "Well Worn" papers, and put some ink on my new "Perfectly Penned" stamp set.

In hindsight, I should've done a bit more tearing, to reveal larger sections of the bottom layer of paper, but, for a first attempt at playing with these papers, I'm not unhappy with how the card turned out.

COLOR ROUND UP COLOR CHALLENGE #34

This weekend Ethan, my youngest, is going to the 11th birthday party of one of his friends.  Of course,  a card is needed .... although Ethan's a pretty great cardmaker himself, he'd much rather spend his time watching WWE on tv (heaven help us), or playing PS3 with his brother (in those moments when they decide they really do love one another).

The colour combination put forward by Holly at Rubber Redneck this week is, I think, perfect for a boy's card.

I got out my Extreme Elements stamp set (I haven't used that for a while, have I?  Been getting too busy with butterflies on my cards, I think!).  It's THE best set for a masculine card.  I've also made use of my fabulous new Stampin' Up! crimper (that thing is seriously heavy-duty - love it!), and trusty Square Lattice embossing folder, to add a bit of texture.  The lightly distressed edges on the cardstock mats were achieved by running my fingernail along the edges.

As soon as I saw this week's colour combination over at Just Add Ink, I knew I wanted to use it to make my nephew's birthday card.  Challenging colours, but good for a boy, I think.

At first I struggled to incorporate the Daffodil Delight, but I'm pretty pleased with the way I ended up using it.  I stamped the grungy stars, from Stampin' Up!'s Extreme Elements stamp set, in Daffodil Delight, then 'rock and rolled' the stamp in Cherry Cobbler ink.  Cool, hey?!

I've had an "at home" day today, which I love.  Well, I did endure an interminably long school assembly, and some grocery shopping first, but the last few hours have been spent at home, catching up on ironing, washing (I'm kidding myself if I think I can ever 'catch up' with that!), and some stamping.  Apart from lunching with friends, this is my favourite kind of day!

Ethan, my youngest, has a birthday party to go to this coming weekend; his friend is turning 11.  I've used the colours in Stacey's Curtain Call Color Challenge to make the birthday boy a card.

JACK'S BIRTHDAY CARD

Much to my dismay, my first-born is growing up all too quickly!  I do try to embrace all the changes and developments that come with every year in my boys' lives, but all the same I do grieve a little inside (I think most Mums can relate to that).  Jack turns 15 today, and I am incredibly proud of the level-headed, sensitive, loving and strong young man he is.  (He's pretty handsome too, and I can take at least half the credit for that!)  Because nothing in life matters more to him than cricket (well, second only to his love for his Mum, ha ha), there was no question about the theme of his birthday card.  Last year I made a very bright card, in is cricket club's colours, but that wasn't an option this year, since Brilliant Blue and Summer Sun have retired, and I sold off all my retired products.  I decided to go with more 'earthy', muted tones this year, and am really pleased with how it turned out.

"EXTREME ELEMENTS" - yes, more!

On the weekend I had friends over for a stamping session, so we could all escape the AFL Grand Final (apologies to football lovers, LOL).  It was a great afternoon, and Judy even stretched WAY out of her pink, girly, floral comfort zone to make a great card using Extreme Elements - click on Judy's name to check it out!

I wasn't very productive while the girls were here, but afterwards I had a play with Extreme Elements, as I wanted to try out a girl's card using these stamps.  I still wanted it to be a bit edgy and grungy, so I turned to my new Color Coach (a 'swatch' collection of all Stampin' Up!'s colours) for inspiration.  The Color Coach is a fantastic tool; it contains heaps of suggested colour combinations that you might never think to use.  Like this one - Melon Mambo, Elegant Eggplant, and Old Olive.  Take a look, and tell me what you think!

"EXTREME ELEMENTS" Earthy Series - part 2

I love my recently-used colour combo of Tangerine Tango, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso and Very Vanilla, so decided to apply it to some cards using "Extreme Elements".  Are you sick of seeing this stamp set yet??  Hubby is - he says "I really don't like this set as much as you do, you know".  Hmph.  I am still having a heap of fun with it, so I'll continue to share what I make!

Today my 'baby' is having a milestone birthday - he's 10!!  I'm trying not to be all soppy, and lament the loss of all the past cuteness, but I must say I am struggling a bit with my littlest growing up.

I'm having great fun with my new "Extreme Elements" stamp set, and right from when he saw this creation, Ethan requested that I use the stamps on his birthday card.  (Darn it, there goes my idea of a cutesy owl card.)  I think every time I use this stamp set, I like it more and more.  Here's what I came up with, using some of the fantastic fresh, new, colours from Stampin' Up!

"EXTREME ELEMENTS" Earthy series ... part 1

I have no doubt that my new "Extreme Elements" stamp set will get a very solid workout.  I can envisage making a lot of masculine cards with it, and probably mostly in 'earthy' tones.  Hence the title ... stay tuned for further instalments!

Here's a little something I whipped up this morning before meeting some friends for coffee.  The Soft Suede background panel has been stamped with the new "Wonderfully Worn" background stamp, which I can also see becoming a staple item for male cards (particularly now that my old faithful "Weathered" stamp has been retired, and has gone to another home).
